Rush, Rose co-author article on cover of May 2022 Green Journal

A new article in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology by UW Ob-Gyn Gynecologic Oncology fellow Shannon Rush, MD and Division of Gynecologic Oncology Director Stephen Rose, MD reexamines age recommendations for bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The article was featured on the cover of the May 2022 issue of the Green Journal, Rush was interviewed on the Obstetrics and Gynecology podcast, and two ob-gyn physicians from the University of California, San Francisco wrote an accompanying editorial. Rose will present findings from the article on May 7 at the ACOG Annual Clinical and Scientific Meeting during the Late-Breaking Abstracts session.

In “A Revised Markov Model Evaluating Oophorectomy at the Time of Hysterectomy for Benign Indication”, authors assessed hazard ratios for mortality by disease, age, hysterectomy with or without bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and use of estrogen therapy. Their review found:

“This updated Markov model argues for the consideration of concurrent salpingo-oophorectomy for patients who are undergoing hysterectomy at age 50 and older and suggests that initiating estrogen in those who need salpingo-oophorectomy before age 50 years mitigates increased mortality risk.”
