Love Note from Laurel: The Final XOXO

A final Love Note, and I feel wistful. Not a sad wistful, but a wistfulness of deep gratitude and appreciation. My time working with you (where did the last 15 years go?) has been the most meaningful work of my professional career. This is a result of the unrelenting commitment (pressure) on the part of all of you (physicians, APPs, trainees, nurses, researchers, administrators, and support staff) to our mission of “improving the quality of life for women in the state of Wisconsin and beyond through research, advocacy, education, and clinical care.” Working with individuals who “breathe” this as part of their lives has exponentially increased my own commitment. At the risk of sounding repetitive, I am grateful.

We have clearly made tremendous strides in each pillar of the mission over the last 15 years. While acknowledging what we have accomplished feels great, it also touches my spirit to recognize how important the work ahead really is. Committing to improving women’s health is not for the faint of heart, and I know there are no faint of heart individuals in this Department. With Dr. Lisa Barroilhet’s steadfast guidance as interim chair, and the incoming chair’s vision, the UW Department of Ob-Gyn has a future that burns brightly. I feel happy.

The thought of retirement conjures up a wide range of emotions. While this “thought” is turning into a reality, I am confident that settling with these emotions and resting my brain will result in me identifying new ways to support women’s health, health equity, and reproductive health care access.

Thank you a million times over for allowing me to work with you on all aspects of our very important mission. I’m looking forward to celebrating (there will be dancing and singing) with all of you at the rescheduled Department Celebration on June 3, 2022 at the Madison Club.

XOXOXOX as always,

Laurel
