UW Hospital and Clinics (UWHC) administration, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) all agree that the informed consent process is imperative to uphold patient rights, patent safety, and effective risk management. According to UWHC compliance department, both provider and patient signatures must be dated and timed in order to demonstrate that the patient was consented prior to the procedure.
Based on a recent sytem-wide audit of informed consent procedures, there is one more thing that UWHC, CMS, and JCAHO should all agree upon: The UW Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology is awesome.
Specifically, the audit found that our physicians were 100% compliant in signing, dating, and timing all consent forms, and having patients and witnesses do the same. It seems simple, as everything does when you’re at the top of your game, but compared to a UWHC-wide compliance rate of 62%, our one-zero-zero looks fairly profound. Only a small handful of departments matched us, and, as is the nature of perfection, nobody topped us.
So, congratulations to us! Keep up the good work.
