Love Note from Laurel: Winter Solstice

My favorite day of the year, the Winter Solstice!! This year it is all about December 21 and I can smell my garden! While it is the first day of winter, what it represents to me is more sunshine…the days are getting longer. We’ll have a little more light in the morning and evening and before we know it there will be daffodils!

The solstice always brings me immediately to the thought of rebirth. This year’s solstice has an even deeper meaning for me: rebirth of our department. We are poised for continued explosion of efforts around clinical care, education, research and advocacy. I have seen each of you subscribe to “constant, unrelenting pressure” in your drive to improve all aspects of care for women. The trajectory is so steep, and that is because of all of your efforts.

After 15 years of working side by side with you, I am confident that you are ready for a new visionary leader, with continued drive to pursue all aspects of our mission. I am so excited for you. A tad sad for me…but that sadness is completely eliminated when I think about this next phase for the whole department. My spirits are high.

It has honestly been the greatest honor of my career to have partnered with you – I’m humbled, grateful, and I am not worthy!

I wish each of you a safe and happy solstice and a joyful New Year. Happy holidays!

XOXO,

Laurel
