More than 82,000 women will be diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer this year. On September 22, 2011 the Division of Gynecologic Oncology held its 3rd annual Sparkle of Hope at the Concourse Hotel to raise research dollars for the program. The Concourse Hotel and Governor’s Club provided an elegant background to host over 230 attendees. Erik Franke, news anchor from Channel 3, was the master of ceremonies. Kathleen Falk was the honorary host for the evening and praised the UW Carbone Cancer Center for advancement in and delivery of cancer care. Dr. Stephen Rose spoke to the group about the advances in science and research that improved the treatment of his personal diagnosis of cancer and how advances in gynecologic cancer research can also improve patient outcomes.
Patient speakers shared their personal stories of diagnosis, treatment and recurrence. The strength demonstrated by these two women as they candidly discussed what ovarian cancer recurrence means and how they hope additional research, fueled by money raised by Sparkle, can improve the future for ovarian cancer survivors --- truly impressed the audience.
The conclusion of the evening was the live auction, which included Madison Firefighters, the UW Marching Band and fast paced bidding. A grand total of $ 69,740 was raised from silent and live auctions, sponsorship of the event and direct donations.
Please save the date of October 2, 2012 for the next Sparkle of Hope.
