Spotlight on Vicki Johnson

When you think of ALL things research related, Vicki Johnson is your person.  Vicki is the Department’s Research Administrator across all divisions.

Vicki has a BS in Accounting from Upper Iowa University, an MBA from the University of Phoenix, and over 15 years of research administration experience.  This serves her well as she is responsible for the day-to-day administrative operations of defined research areas (both basic and clinical). This includes: assisting faculty and staff in locating funding opportunities; grant and contract proposal preparations; establishment of award set up and infrastructure; financial management of all research funding through monitoring and approving research expenditures; and preparing regular reporting on the status of funding.  Vicki is a resource for investigators for advising on grant policies and compliance with federal, state, and university regulations governing research. This last role accounts for a big share of her time since interpretation of the regulations apply to many areas within  research operations. Vicki’s responsibilities also include managing all time and effort reporting which is critical for one of research’s largest expenditures – salaries.  She also assists with, and ensures the department is in compliance with human subject research, animal research and conflict of interest issues/management. All of this means a close relationship with the investigators and acting as the liaison with the central research office for UW, Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP), the federal agency and/or sponsors of the research, and the Dean’s Office.

“Honestly….of all of the different jobs I have had, I love Research Administration the most.” Vicki started at the campus level as a grants and contract specialist in RSP, transitioning to the school/college level in the Dean’s Office in Engineering, to now the department level in Ob/Gyn. Vicki states, “The added bonus to working at the department level, especially in Ob/Gyn, is assisting Dr. Shah with the development and management of the Resident Research Program, and assisting the fellows and junior faculty with their research needs.”

Vicki is married to Jim of 15 years, who works for Xlyem. They have two children Alyssa 24 and J.J. (James) 14. Alyssa is the ballet mistress for The Stoughton Center for Performing Arts, and also teaches ballet with the School of Madison Ballet. J.J. is a freshman at Edgewood High School and plays year round baseball with the Wisconsin River Cats. He is a pitcher and right/left field player.

Growing up in LaCrosse, WI, in a very Italian dominant family, Vicki was the third sibling out of four.  Her father was a pharmaceutical salesman for Lederle Laboratories (now Pfizer) until he left his position and opened “Cacciapaglio’s Italian Family Restaurant” which the entire family helped to run. Vicki’s mother was the executive secretary for the President of Trane Company at the time.

Vicki enjoys knitting and crocheting, candle making, and………after 40 years has gone back to riding American Saddle bred horses with hopes of possibly showing.  She loves art museums, and testing her memory on the old (impressionist era) painters, renaissance sculptures and architectures.
