5/26/2020 - Operations Update

Welcome to the MAY 26, 2020 update on UW Ob-Gyn departmental operations.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW TODAY?

Read this excellent interview on racial/ethnic disparities and COVID-19 in the U.S. with Dr. Tiffany Green, assistant professor in UW Ob-Gyn and the UW-Madison Department of Population Health Sciences, in Medical News Today: ‘A no-win situation’ – Expert weighs in on COVID-19 racial disparities

EDUCATION

VIRTUAL DEPARTMENT MEETING

  • Join us on Thursday, May 28 for SMPH Updates, presented by UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health Dean Robert Golden, MD. 8:00am, watch via WebEx, all are welcome!
  • On the May 21 Virtual Department Meeting, Jim Conway, MD joined us to talk about vaccines. He provided responses to questions submitted via the chat:
    • Is there an auto-immune like basis for Kawasaki-like vascular inflammation in children related to high COVID rates?
      • Does not seem to be autoimmune but rather post-infectious inflammatory process – similar to Kawasaki or perhaps rheumatic fever.  Still being sorted out but acts like an autoimmune vasculitis yet without past history or recurrences – yet?
    • What are your thoughts about schools opening in the fall?
      • It’s going to be challenging – but feasible if both schools and parents can work together to take responsibility for hygiene and infection control.

Please plan to join us on Thursday, June 4 for a virtual department meeting and return to Grand Rounds. Everyone in the department is welcome to participate:

7:00-8:00 AM VARIOUS PRESENTATIONS

  • 7:00 – 7:30 am: Digital Measures Project (presentation by Dr. Nancy Raymond and Anne Stahr)

TAKE A DEEP BREATH

Shout out to Madison small business Anthology – they donated stickers, washi tape and crafting supplies that nurses on Labor and Delivery used to add some color to their PPE. Thanks for bringing some brightness to L&D!
